A big thanks to Alma, of Alma’s Bridal in Lincoln, California for giving us our first little known fact; custom gown services. She shared with me the names of two wedding dress companies that offer custom changes such as adding sleeves or changing a neckline (along with other options) as you place your dress order with a bridal salon.

Perhaps you’ve heard of these companies, but my guess is, you probably didn’t know about their “custom services” policy. Not all bridal salons offer the options to clients.

Both of these companies are available in many bridal salons across the country.

Casablanca Bridal is the first company Alma mentioned (it’s a fave of hers).

The information below is from Casablanca’s FAQ page on their website.

Q: I like a Casablanca Bridal gown, but I would like to change the neckline and add sleeves.  Is that possible?
A.  Yes, Casablanca Bridal owns and operates its own state-of-the-art factory, and is able to customize your gown to your particular preference.   Our unique ability to customize our styles gives brides a chance to design a one-of-a-kind creation.

These types of custom design changes are a BIG DEAL to mid-life brides who have limited “age appropriate” or “fit flattering” options when it comes to bridal gowns. Of course, you’ve got to be certain before ordering up a customized gown that it’s the one, but this certainly offers a wider range of choices and possibilities for mid-life brides.

Fabric Tip:

Alma also provides us with fact number two. As a seamstress by trade, she frequently orders extra fabric from bridal dress manufacturers and makes changes on-site for her brides.  She was adding lace sleeves to match the bodice of a lovely peach v-neck gown when I visited.

Did you know most gown manufacturers sell fabric by the yard to match your dress? I wish I would’ve thought to ask about this option when I was dress shopping!

Jasmine Bridal is the second company Alma shared that offers custom services.

Here is the info from Jasmine’s website:

What do Custom Design Services Mean for You?

Many times, when brides try on gowns, they love the overall look of a gown,
but wish it were different in some small (or sometimes huge) way! Jasmine’s custom services allow you to make those changes. Here are just a few examples
of the modifications we make to our gowns on a regular basis:

  • Change the neckline
  • Change the train
  • Change the embroidery or embellishment pattern
  • Add / Delete detail on the skirt
  • Change the skirt silhouette
  • Add sleeves
  • Change the sleeve length

Call Ahead

Once you locate a local Casablanca or Jasmine retailer, call ahead to ask if they’ll be willing to work with you on custom services. Don’t assume they will. Not all salons are comfortable providing this service.

There are probably other gown manufacturer’s that provide these types of services, but it’s up to us (savvy brides that we are) to ask salon personnel if any of their vendors offer them.

As mid-life brides, being diligently proactive by asking for assistance and inquiring about services makes traveling down the bridal path easier and more fulfilling. Don’t be shy! Be Bride Proud!

Plus Size Discovery

Little Known Fact #3: Plus size ladies can order fuller sizes from companies like Casablanca and Jasmine but Julietta Gowns by Morilee is a line of gowns specific for fuller figured brides. Even the pictures on the website are beautifully dressed plus size models. Thank goodness! And the gowns are gorgeous.

Specialized Salons

Little Known Fact #4 – Some salons are dedicated to specific sizes, brides, or dress designs.

Here in the Sacramento area we are fortunate to have a salon dedicated to curvy full figures. Sparkle Bridal Couture only carries sizes 14 – 30. Their website and store are beautiful. Here’s how they describe themselves (in part) from their website:

Why Sparkle?

SPARKLE bridal couture is the first and only bridal showroom on the West Coast solely dedicated to chic plus size bridal and stylish special occasion gown sizes 14-30. Centrally located in charming East Sacramento, our airy and calming showroom boasts the largest selection of gowns specifically for plus size brides. With nearly 150 gowns sizes 14-30 in stock to choose from, every SPARKLE bride will have her “bridal moment.”

Roundup

Here’s the recap:

1. Some gown companies will customize your gown to come from the factory direct to the retailer with changes.

2. You can order fabric to match your gown (to have a jacket made, sleeves put in etc)

3. Gowns can be ordered in larger sizes (up to size 30 in most cases) AND Julietta by Morilee is one line specifically for fuller figures.

4. Some Bridal Salons are dedicated to specializing in Plus Size Gowns

Don’t settle for a gown or outfit that doesn’t make your inner bride shine. There are companies and people out there who are willing to help us. We just have to find them and ask for their help!

My BIG hope is one day to have salons dedicated to Mid-Life Brides.
